The Jadelist: NOV 16

Hey hey lovely people!

I'm not sure if time's just travelling a little bit slower these days, or that I'm becoming even harder to please, but when I start to write up these posts, it feels like I like I heard the first few songs months ago.

By the point I come to writing it up, some of these songs are classics to me, and I'm ready to lip-sync my heart out!

Either way, time moving more slowly gives me the chance to appreciate more music. Win-win if you ask me!

Anyway, without further ado, here's the Jadelist for November!

1.

Because I'm Me by The Avalanches




Instantly after hearing this, I just got funky, young Michael Jackson vibes.

This song samples Why Can't I Get It Too by Six Boys In Trouble, with the lyrics rearranged.

This song gets to me a bit too much and I just wanna do the twist.

Also, props to the remix for keeping the funky, soul atmosphere alive, while still managing to put a modern twist in.

2.

33 "GOD" by Bon Iver



Now, I know 22, A Million has been out for a while now, but I thought that 22 (Over S∞∞N) would've been my most played.

I. Was. Wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I still adore 22, but if I had a pound for every time I played this song, I would be a very lucky girl!

And let's just talk about the bass when the beat drops. I died and resurrected after it.

Also, this song provides the only happiness when referring to folding clothes. Maybe it'll give me some motivation. Probably not...



3.

Sea Hearts by Honeyblood



Honestly, I feel like this could be some girl power anthem from the mid-00's, like from a scene where the alternative girls fight back against the preps in a typical high school movie.

Maybe like a punkier The Go! Team.

Truth be told, I do feel a little badass listening to this, at home, wrapped in a blanket. Edgy.

4.

LFTM (feat. Felly) by Healy



Obligatory 'I found a cute song on Vine before it dies' song? Check.

Though, let's all just admit that this starts with the most beautiful piano sounds, that develop a jazzy bass to it.

Could someone help a sister out and let me know what this genre would be called? For years in my brain, I've been calling it underground jazz or nighttime jazz.

Props to the thought in the lyrics of this song too. I know I say it too much, but it's really refreshing to hear a rap style song that doesn't mention women, drugs and fast cars in every other verse. Nice one Healy and Felly.

5.

On Hold by The xx



I mean c'mon.

It's The xx.

Now, I'm not gonna write this and act like I'm the worlds biggest The xx fan, but I did have a little outburst of excitement when I saw that they'd released a new song.

Gonna be honest, I do prefer their older work, but On Hold is still a lovely little song, and nice comeback for them.

Your Sunday lazy playlist has now just got a little bit funkier, thanks to this track.

Stop For Nothing by courtship.



Seriously, what's with this month's Jadelist and all the funky tunes?

Someone pass me the flares and peace symbol necklaces!

I mean, I should just come to accept that I'm a sucker for a funky bass.

Also, on a tangent, I find it really aesthetically pleasing that courtship. spell their name with a lower case 'c'.

7.

Kick Jump Twist by Sylvan Esso



Now for my most played track of the month.

Apologies to everyone at the radio station who heard me play this way too many times in the office. Just indoctrinating everyone on the down low.

I mean, typically I wouldn't like this kind of a song. I don't know, maybe it's a bit too dance-ish, or a bit too techno.

Apparently this song was an exception to my brains blueprint, because I was OBSESSED.

Another fab song from Sylvan Esso.



8.

Public Display of Affection by EAT FAST



I'll be honest, when I first heard this song, I wasn't the biggest fan.

But then, the guitar kicked in about 20 seconds in.

I was hooked.

Let's be honest, I'm such a straight edge kid, but this song does make me feel edgy and cool for around three minutes.

Yay, musical emotions.



9.

Antonio Banderas by Forever Cult



Yeah, that's right. This song is called Antonio Banderas.

Yes, I am so young in that if you mention Antonio Banderas, my instant thought is him in Spy Kids.

I am 00's trash.

This song however, is not 00's trash. It's actually really good.

Though, shame on me for mishearing the lyric 'Cautiously you repress the memory, like caught in a dream' for 'Cautiously you replace the memory, like Cobb in a dream', thinking it was an Inception reference.

Inception references or not, this is still a fab little number.

So Good by Warpaint



I must've been feeling a lot cooler than I actually am in November, because man, there are way too many edgy, seductive, jazzy style songs.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love the vast majority of this song, but I swoon around three minutes in when the audio becomes more distorted and encapsulated.

It definitely gives it a real early 00's vibe.

Also, props to Warpaint for making a longer length that doesn't get boring. Now, I don't have to refresh as often. Not all heroes wear capes.

The Jadelist: OCT 16

Hey hey lovely people

Remember how I said that last months Jadelist was probably the hardest I've ever had to narrow down?

Yeah, take that back, this edition was narrowed from 28 to 10

I'm still a little heartbroken about having to take out a ton of fab songs, but a big factor that played in 'the cull' was the size of the artists following

The purpose of Jadelist is to introduce people to songs that they wouldn't normally hear on mainstream radio (Sorry about that Kanye)

Nevertheless, here are 10 lovely songs that you should be listening to!

1.

Alaska by Maggie Rogers

When I say that this was my track of the month, I mean it to the extent that I would listen to it multiple times a day, and that was just the end of October.

Let's not even talk about how I would listen to this on repeat for hours when I first heard it!

I found this through Radio 6 (Clearly a surprise. I bet you're all shocked that I found a song through 6 Music. Is my sarcasm evident enough yet?), Shazam'ed it and was instantly hooked.

I was surprised to find out that this track was actually released back in June. It became a bit of an Internet sensation after Pharrell Williams basically forgot how to function as a human being after hearing it. Definitely recommend you check that out.

Then, the official music video was released in October, so that kinda makes me up to date and relevant with the cool kids, right?

Like Pharrell said, it really is wonderful to hear someone making music as themselves unapologetically. Keep doing what you're doing Maggie, because it's perfect!

2.

Actorion by Palenco

Ah, now for one of my shames as a person. I am Welsh (Although apparently not! That's a long story for another time) and have lived in Wales all my life. Heck, I even got an A in GCSE Welsh, but I can't speak conversational Welsh for the life of me!

So when I find Welsh music that sounds great, I'm basically sat contently, appreciating the music and catching the odd word for my brain to translate. The struggles of being Jade.

Nevertheless, I don't think you need to be able to speak a language to appreciate a fab song, and this is a perfect example.

I first heard Palenco on 6 Music late one night when their song Cloudy Leftovers was playing.

Let's face it, there are around 7 billion people on earth and approximately 3 million of them live in Wales, so when you hear a bit of Welsh being spoken, you pay attention.

So I had a patriotic jam at some unholy o'clock, then took to Spotify to find some more fab songs.

Who knows, maybe one day I'll actually be able to understand Welsh properly and appreciate all the lyrics, but until that day, I'm gonna rely on my friend Sammy to be my personal translator. Cheers!

3.

Small Crimes by Nilufer Yanya 

First off, I absolutely love saying the name of this artist!

Now, I know the song has quite a somber tone to it, but I think that's what makes it so addictive.

Did I listen to it way too many times on repeat? I'll leave that up to you to decide!

Truthfully, I think I just have an addictive nature to songs that are shorter than three minutes, always yearning for just a little bit more.

I also like how the guitar in the bridge shouldn't fit in with the melancholy of the song, yet it works so well!

What I really love though is how this song is completely unique to anything else heard; it has its own sound and identity, which is refreshing to heat these days.

After doing some more research, a.k.a spending way too many hours on Spotify, I think you should keep an eye out for Nilufer on Jadelist in the future. Definitely one to watch. 

4.

Reignite by Knox Brown and Gallant

As you can tell by the cover art, there's finally a song that I didn't find through 6 Music or Spotify. Just gonna pat myself on the back!

No, I actually heard this when I made my annual trip to the cinema, this time to watch Bridget Jones' Baby.

Now I, like most of the population who've watched any Bridget Jones movie, ship Bridget and Mark because goals, obviously.

So when this song played during, lets call it their 'reunion', I had to pause the shipping, whack out my phone and Shazam this song.

Luckily I was in the back row, so nobody behind me could judge the beacon of light I just emitted into the room, but I had this song for keeps.

Mark my words, Gallant will be a big artist in 2017. He's starting to pop up everywhere lately and his voice is just incredible.

Now, excuse me while I listen to this on repeat before ultimately continuing with this post. 

5.

Never Going Home by Hazel English

Now, I don't particularly know what I would call this genre. It's like some hybrid between indie and folk, with an electronic tone.

Whatever it is, it's absolutely what I live for.

I heard this on 6 Music Recommends and Shazamed it probably less than 10 seconds into the song.

I was hooked.

Not to get all picturesque and imagery on this, but I just imagine summer times in fields far away and quiet road trips when I hear this song. Maybe I'm just projecting my goals onto this song, who knows!

Either way, this song is totally tappable. My thumbs may or may not be furiously tapping to the beat right now.

6.

Strung Out by Ruby Empress

Fun fact: my phone likes to delete some of my music randomly after a few plays. Despite that, this song has continued to stay on there. Surely that's a sign.

Can I call this indie funk? I feel like I wanna do some serious head nodding, maybe pull some awful dad dancing moves and tap my foot on the floor, but in a cool kid kind of way.

Or I might be doing all of that right now...

I first heard this when doing my many YouTube music channel rounds.

Need a song that feels funky, almost in a late 00's way? Give this a hit!

7.

R.E.D by A Tribe Called Red

This was the song that I was surprised to like.

I first heard this a few weeks back when Mary Anne Hobbs played it on her show, and it took me surprise.

I mean, normally you wouldn't here something so edgy with a heavy beat like this, but I became addicted to it.

I mean, it immediately gave me Mercy vibes, what with the multiple voices and tribal vibes, which was great to have something like that again.

I didn't anticipate liking this song so much.

Give it a quick listen, I bet you'll be hooked!

8.

Holy Soul by Salt Cathedral 

Ethereal.

That's the best word I can use to describe this song.

The vocals just sound so pure, but teamed with the delicate and high pitched instruments, they create something magical.

And then, at around a minute, the beat kicks in, and I suddenly get a sense of wanderlust; sunsets in far away places.

I don't know, but this song just makes me feel so adventurous, but it also brings me a longing for summer again, which isn't the best when it's currently November.

Brb, just gonna sit here and listen to Holy Soul while counting down the days until summer. 

9.

Atone by SLO & Bearcubs

Acapella and harmonies be dazzled.

If you want an upbeat song that will make you feel calm, then you've stumbled into the right place.

Again, can somebody tell me what genre this fits into? Because I need more music like this in my life.

Maybe that's why I appreciate it so much, because it is what it is and not an imitation of every other song you hear.

P.s, the name Bearcubs is just the cutest

10.

Should Know Better by Habitats

Ah, now for a Jadelist must-have: a song from an advert.

See, I can't let you down!

This song is used in the most recent Ugg advert and it's simply adorable.

Though, can I just say, this is such a summery and happy song, so why is it used to advertise Uggs in the sunshine?!

Nevertheless, I may have furiously clicked through a load of YouTube videos to try and get the ad up to Shazam it.

After 10 minutes, logic finally kicked in and I searched directly for the ad instead. My bad.

Nevertheless, this is such a cute song with that seaside Brit feel to it. My absolute weakness!

The Jadelist: SEP 16

Hey hey lovely people!

September dragged for me.

Not in itself, no. Time wise, it flew for me, but musically, I lived a struggle.

I think this must've been the hardest Jadelist to narrow down: 25 songs to 10!

I just found way too much good music this month, so a lot of songs got the chop.

Fear not though, because this means that only the best songs made it into the list, so without further ado, here's the Jadelist for the month of September!

1.

Last Of Your Kind by Ed Harcourt

Let's kick things off with this track by Ed Harcourt.

I mean, it's practically a given now that I first heard this track on Radio 6, like let's be honest!

And thank God that I was lucky enough to hear this lovely track.

It has that aura of lovely, sentimental rock. Quite a weird combination, yet still so sincere.

I also feel like I get a sense of exploration when I listen to this track too. Maybe I'm just clutching at excuses to me wanting to travel Northern Europe. My bad!

Look past the heavy instruments and you'll see that this rock song has a lot more of a lovely character than you'd think!

2.

On The Frame by Beta Radio

I mean, is it really a Jadelist if I don't include some form of a country song?! 

C'mon, let me justify my country love!

I just so happened to hear this song while I was going through Spotify generated playlists towards the beginning of the month.

It only took five seconds for me to fall in love with it. I knew from that moment that this song was firmly staying put in this months Jadelist. 

This track has such a lovely pattern to it, which is beautifully complimented by bass in the background. Y'know I'm all about that bass...

Plus, I think this song is perfectly fitting for the end of summer/start of autumn that we're now experiencing, "y'know, you have to let go" of Summer, or at least for me!

3.

Lying Has To Stop by Soft Hair

Confession time. I'm obsessed with this track, and I think it's because of how weird it is. 

It's almost like a surreal love.

I mean first, let's talk about the name. The duo are called Soft Hair, and that's no understatement in the slightest! 

I mean, just take a look at the video!

Now, when I first heard this song, I immediately took it in some kind of comedy vibe, and who could blame me? The opening instrument remind me of one of those wavy board things you'd have as a kid.

But then, it was almost like I came under the spell of the song, and I really can't stop listening!

Every time it comes on when I'm listening to Radio 6, I break out in to song! 

Now, don't deceive me! I know you love this song too! Lying has to stop! 

4.

Cool 2 by Hoops

This song makes me so happy, yet so sad!

I mean, don't get me wrong, it's an incredible song, but it's so short! The amount of times I've pressed the replay button on this is too embarrassing to admit!

One minute and fifty five seconds is definitely not enough for me. I'm musically greedy! 

But I suppose that's what makes it so special and leaves you coming back for more! You can never say the song was overkilled and lasted too long!

It gives me a short dose of that summer-type rock that's getting me through this cold weather. Bless this track! Counting down the days until summer already!

5.

Twice by Catfish and the Bottlemen 

Now, to say I'm late to the party is an understatement.

Don't get me wrong, I completely recognise the name Catfish and the Bottlemen, but I've never listened to them before, at least never knowingly and through my own choice.

What an idiot I have been!

It's funny, because they almost give me a sense of that early 00's style of pop punk, but as if it's grown up over the years, and this is what it's like now.

In all honesty, I'm still amazed how with some songs, you can completely dismiss the lyrics and genre and still see it as an upbeat song, like an oxymoron in itself, and this is completely one for me. 

I'm guessing I'm the last person to listen to them, but if there is actually one more person out there who hasn't here's your chance! Enjoy!

6.

The Spoils by Massive Attack

Now, for a more calming song.

It's really nice to get some more tracks that have that 'Bristol' style, like Massive Attack and Portishead. 

I mean the first thing that popped into my head when I heard this was it felt like a more serious/less sexy version of Glory Box by Portishead.

Which is completely understandable from the links between the groups.

Either way, I am 110% up for a complete revival of this style of music! Let's get on it!

7.

Terribly So by Howe Gelb

I almost think this is an unwritten rule of life; hear a Howe Gelb song, must include it in a playlist.

Again, I'm late to the Howe scene, first hearing about him through The Common Linnets. Since I heard his work with Giant Sand, I became hooked on his jazzy Americana/country style. 

Really, I think it's just any time I hear a bass, I go weak at the knees and can't stop tapping my foot. 

His voice just fits perfectly with a bass rhythm, it's magical.

For me, this is easy listening at it's finest. 

What I really want to know though is who is the female additional vocal? For what it's worth, she reminds me of Colbie Caillat, which if it isn't, would be a great set up for a future song.

Can I send requests please?!

8.

And The Bubble Burst by High Tide 15:47

It's funny because I get so confused every time I see this band name. Can't really blame me for getting High Tyde and High Tide 15:47 mixed up!

I mean, they both have a similar style of indie/pop-rock, so no judgement today please!

Though, where High Tyde are more 1975-esque, I feel that High Tide 15:47 have more of a Vampire Weekend style to them, yet still in a style of their own. 

Again, I can see this as such a summery song.

I mean, let's just admit it now, I probably on some subconscious level keep picking these songs so I can repress the fact that winter is coming. 

But as long as I listen to this lovely summery song, I won't notice and it'll still be warm and sunny outside, right?

9.

She Said by Sundara Karma

C'mon, it's Sundara Karma, I had to!

This is probably the second time I've ever been really happy and learnt something useful from a YouTube Ad!

Bless the YouTube algorithms or Cookies for playing this song for me. Very much appreciated!

Let's be honest, it will never be able to compete with Flame for me, because that's firmly in my place as one of my favourite songs of all time, but it well and truly deserves a place in this months Jadelist! 

It has a differing style to Flame, in that it's more upbeat and pop-rocky-indie, but trust me when I say it's a serious foot tapper and earworm.

Like apologies in advance for getting this stuck in your head.

10.

Ivy (Throwing Snow Remix) by Tusks

I was lucky enough to first hear this song in a magical way.

Last Wednesday, Lauren Laverne had the illustrator, Chris Riddell on her show, who did one of the most creative things I've seen a while.

For an hour throughout the show, he was periscoping him illustrating each track as he heard it. Then, he went on to sketch the headphones moment track, Ivy by Tusks (which you can see here at 44:15 minutes in)

Not only did I instantly find the song beautiful, but the illustration to match it was equally so. 

Honestly, I think it was a great experience to see music visually expressed, and I'd love to see it again.

The Jadelist: AUG 16

Hey hey lovely people!

Now, not to be biased, but I always look forward to writing an August Jadelist.

Okay, this might only be my second August Jadelist, but cut me some slack, it is after all my birthday month.

Not only that, but August is truly summer for me and just overall my favourite time of year, so it's nice to take a peek at what songs corresponded with my happiness.

And boy, did I have a great music month!

So let's not hold it off any longer, here's this months Jadelist:

1.

Dreams by Beck

Disclaimer disclaimer disclaimer, I did not steal this song from the new Sky advert

Nope, because I'm one trendy gal, I actually first heard it on Radio 6, while in bed, probably eating some kind of snack. Like I said, I'm trendy.

It's pretty funny, because I never really gave Beck a chance. Last I remembered was Kanye almost interrupting him at the 2015 Grammy's.

Then, ignorant old me realised he was the guy who sang Loser, so just backing up into my corner of shame. Bye everyone!

But back to Dreams. Definitely not like loser.

It has more of a pop vibe to it with a catchy rhythm. Pre-warning, you will be neck popping to this song.

The bridge takes on much more of an acoustic, ethereal style, then springs back into a pop rock chorus.

So if you don't have a TV and haven't heard this yet, here's your chance. 

2.

Youth by Glass Animals

My ultimate predicament of this month was not putting the whole album in.

Now, I've probably stated this before, but I'm not an artist person, but a song person.

Take a look at my playlists and you'll find that the vast majority of artists in there only have one song.

Rare is it that I find artists where I like all of their songs, so this is a BIG DEAL. So much so that I actually bought my first CD that was current since Lana Del Rey's Born To Die.

So little old Jade strolled into Cheltenham town for the first time, trying to find a HMV to buy How To Be A Human Being on release day.

The whole album was played 3 or 4 times then on my way back to Wales. No regrets.

But back to the song. I chose Youth because it's my favourite from the album, and luckily enough, was released as a single a few weeks back.

I would try and describe their style, but it's just ever changing, from electro to pop, indie, rock and acoustic.

I'm pretty confident that if you listen to this, you'll be hooked. 

3.

The Day I Lost My Voice by Sweet Baboo

Now, cutting down this months Jadelist was no fun at all, trying to narrow 15 fab songs down to 10, but I couldn't cut this lovely one out.

The Day I Lost My Voice has a sweet, country/folk style, but not in the typical Southern country style that a lot of people don't seem to get along with.

This might be down to a more British take on country, or should I say Welsh. That's right, Sweet Baboo, or Stephen Black, is actually from Wales. Big up big up!

Which is pretty funny really, because this song just gives me feelings of being in Cornwall in the summer. Too much imagery? My bad!

The style of this song seems so similar to something I love, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Regardless, I'm hooked on it.

I promise that this track will put a smile on your face, so give it a listen.

4.

Pipe Down by Recreations

Does anyone feel instantly more late 90's listening to this? Like even after just five seconds of this playing?

For me, I think it's because I can't help but notice Sunchyme or some other late 90's/early 00's song from this. Can anyone help me out?

Regardless, this song instantly blew me over with a ton of nostalgia.

But don't get too attached to that beat, because the chorus infuses into the song with some rock, and somehow, it works really well.

It feels like a modern twist on something that makes it even greater, like meshing two styles together and creating something that just sounds adventurous in all the right ways.

Also, shout out to the album art. Pretty sweet!

5.

Fiction by Kygo & Tom Odell

I mean c'mon, it's Kygo. Let me have my one DJ that I actually like the sound of.

Plus, Tom Odell too. Putting Kygo and folk artists together. Is this real life?!

Its a much gentler style of electro/dance music, y'know, a less aggressive bass and casual zapping sounds. Yeah, not the biggest dance fan here, but Kygo solves that for me.

It really is incredible to get folk rock and dance to collaborate so well together, so props to Kygo and Tom for this.

Give it a listen while there's still some summer sun left. 

6.

22 (Over S∞∞N) by Bon Iver

Okay, please don't be put off by the edgy Tumblr style title. 

I mean, sure, it might even sound at first like the song is trying 'too hard' to be different, or at least create a too modern style, but give it a few more seconds for the vocals to kick in.

Because as soon as those vocals begin, you will be captured by this musical spell.

Hauntingly beautiful is the best way to describe it.

Then, when the lazy guitar kicks in, it becomes even more so sweet. Such a lazy Sunday morning song.

I mean, there are no words to give this song justice, because it is an experience; an amalgamation of different sounds, coming together in peace.

And yes, it is better than Skinny Love. Trust me, this is magical.

7.

Doria by Olafur Arnalds

Rare is it to find a piece of music where the first descriptive word would be beautiful.

I mean, I know I need to calm down with the visuals, but this song just gives me images of vast libraries, or places with so much exploration, but also peace and tranquillity. Also, a bit of nostalgia too.

Plus, the name Olafur Arnalds should be familiar to you from last months Jadelist. Remember I mentioned his Island songs project?

Well, Doria is the last song to feature on Island Songs.

What I love is that this song is much more than music, in that I feel like it captures emotion and atmosphere too. I could easily believe this was from a movie soundtrack if you had told me.

If last months post wasn't enough of a message to have a listen, then here's hoping this month is.

8.

Once Around The Block by Badly Drawn Boy

I really am a sucker for that lazy indie rock style that was big around the 00's.

Once around the block has a city style feel to it, which I suppose would be accurate, given the name.

I really appreciate its laid back style, but even more so during the instrumental around 2 minutes in, when the guitar leads the song.

Are you someone that likes this style of music too? Because this song is actually 16 years old now. Time to feel old.

So feeling a nostalgia flashback? Have a listen.

9.

Dancing In The Moonlight (It's Caught Me In It's Spotlight) by Thin Lizzy

Speaking of flash backs, lets go even further into the past with this track, back to the 70's.

It's funny, because a lot of people these days who listen to older music say they were brought up on this, or their parents played it, so it just stuck with them.

I was brought up on chart music, Madonna and Manic Street Preachers, so this is all new to me, and I'm glad it is.

I mean, now that I'm older, I think I have a chance to appreciate this music instead of being forced and bored by it (Not saying I hate Madonna or the Manics, forever a fan).

Which is weird really, finding songs like this new when they're nearly double my age!

I doubt there are many people out there who haven't listened to this yet, but if you wanna a few minutes to boogie on down, be my guest.

10.

Supersoaker by Kings of Leon

I was on my way home, listening to the radio, when someone phoned up and requested a song to play for a water fight, and the producer chose a song called Supersoaker.

I'll be honest, I didn't have much faith before I heard it. I mean, I'm the queen of cheesy puns, but wasn't expecting much from this.

Then it started playing and I was just sat in a pool of misjudgement, falling in love with this song.

I really don't give Kings Of Leon enough credit for how much I love them, and it's taken me this long until hearing this song to realise this.

I think it's really easy to get caught up in Sex On Fire and Use Somebody as their only style. Don't get me wrong, those songs are great, but I love their songs like Radioactive and now, Supersoaker.

I know I say it way too many times, but I live for that summery style of indie/rock, and this perfectly fits the bill, Supersoaker and all.




So that's it for this months Jadelist, and the last Jadelist of the summer.

Be prepared for around two months of posts relishing in the Autumn season, and then every other post being filled of summer songs, wishing it was August again. Go figure!

The Jadelist: JUL 16

Hey hey lovely people!

I'm actually writing this post in the month it's meant to be wrote in.

That's right, I've actually found time in-between a thrilling life of playing Pokemon Go, listening to "dem dank tunes" and eating all the carbs to write a post. MVP!

I mean, fine, it's not on the first of the month, but y'know, credit where credit's due!

Now, I am probably being biased and, let's face it, still caught up in the music, but I really think this months music selection is the best of this year so far. A lot of indie pop style songs to jam to

So, let's not wait any longer. Without further ado, here's this months Jadelist:

1.

Electric Feel by MGMT

This song is nearly 10 years old. 

That's right. Just let it sink in.

I mean, that just seems outrageous, especially because I've never heard this song until this year. I mean, of course I know a few tracks from Oracular Spectacular, namely Time To Pretend and Kids, but I've definitely found a new top dog in this.

Like, lets just start the Electric Feel challenge now: Try to listen to the whole song without nodding your head to the rhythm.

It has that indie pop vibe that, of course, I'm obsessed with, but I particularly love the last 40-odd seconds where everything kinda amalgamates together, but still gels. 

2.

O Children by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

Second song in and we're already at 'Jade is trash' territory.

So, Jade, where did you find such a distinct song from a band I can't recall hearing before?

Harry Potter.

That's right, I found this when I was rewatching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. 

I thought it'd be a great idea to rewatch the Harry Potter series, including watching Deathly Hallows part 2 for the first time in like five years, which ultimately ended in all the tears (RIP Snape), but also finding this little gem.

Now, this song is what I like to refer to as a gentle anthem. By that, I mean it has that feel and the lyrics that a classic anthem would have, but at a much slower, softer pace. 

So don't be underestimated by this song. It may start out as quiet, but quickly builds to epic when the chorus kicks in. 

3. 

Final Song by MØ

Let's be honest, I just think MØ is the bee's knees.

Is that because of the special Ø? Maybe...

But I think we can all agree that MØ's sound is incredibly fitting in today's music.

So, after the hit that was Kamikaze, she's back with Final Song.

Now, at first, the song takes a calm route, with quieter vocals, but a build up looming around the corner, until you go into brief acapella and the beat drops, going into the MØ that we know and love.

I think what makes her popular is this style of northern European dance that she channels, along the lines of Kygo and Avicii.

4.

Hold Me Down by Halsey

Is it too much of a stretch to say I found Halsey because of feminism?

I help present a radio show called The Girl Power Hour, and I was on the hunt for some girl anthems to play.

So after searching through a couple of Spotify 'girl power' playlist, I happened to stumble across Halsey for the first time.

Yeah, this led to me falling in love with her sound in I'd say a solid 10 seconds.

It's funny because the name Halsey seems very familiar, but never had I actually listened to her before.

I like to think of her as maybe a bit more of a darker Melanie Martinez sound, considering their vocals are pretty similar.

Definitely worth a listen for a different kind of sound. 

5.

Sleepyhead by Passion Pit

Now, this is definitely not the first time I've heard this song.

Throwback to nerdy Jade circa 2009-2010, when this song was actually used to advertise Little Big Planet 2. Y'know, that cutie game with the sack boy. Cheeky bit of nostalgia there.

The first time I heard this song play (On PS Home, because the cheesy level was real), I instantly fell in love with it.

Now, I'm struggling to remember why I started to listen to this again in July. I think it really might've just been as simple as me leaving my main playlist on shuffle and it staying as an earworm.

It has such a magical, kooky and unique sound, like some kind of quirky alternative dance song, if it can even be described.

This one will definitely be a long time favourite, just like it has been for years.

6.

You Are The Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne

Now for another song that I knew long before the month of July.

Just like the song above, I believe that I heard this again after leaving my main playlist on shuffle.

I mean, my main playlist has over 1000 tracks on it, it's like finding a needle in a haystack!

Nevertheless, Ray LaMontagne creates a vintage jazzy soul vibe with this song, so much so that I can't believe it's actually from 2008.

It's just a classical love anthem really that you can just rock to. Big up Ray and the incredible trumpet!

7.

Promise I Do by Whyte Horses

The opening of this song feels like some kind of time vortex to me.

Now, I wasn't around during the time when Brit Punk was a big thing, but I like to think that the first few second of this song encapsulates what that was like.

Or maybe I'm just being a massive music saddo. Who knows?

What I do know is that this song has some kind of classic Brit pop-punk vibe to it, something that doesn't feel of this time.

But don't let this put you off. This sound is what makes them so special.

It's really so hard to put into words, but just give them a listen and I promise you will instantly feel more British.

8.

Are We Ready? (Wreck) by Two Door Cinema Club

Can we all just take a moment to appreciate Two Door Cinema Club?

Rarely do I hear a song by them that I can't completely fall in love with. They've really been a band that I've loved since the beginning.

The verses of this song seem to be a lot more bass heavy and, dare I say, they slightly have a reggae vibe to them.

The pace dramatically quickens with the bridges and chorus, and yet, it still works.

It's a different sound to say, Tourist History, yet still familiar as them and still lovable.

I approve of this change.

9.

Say My Name by Olafur Arnalds & Arnor Dan

Okay, whoah, Olafur Arnalds is incredible.

As you all probably know, I'm pretty much addicted to Radio 6. Is it on in the background right now while I'm writing this? Maybe.

Well, Olafur has featured on 6 Music a lot recently, mainly because of his Island Songs project.

Now, I'm not gonna go into too much detail, but starting in June this year, over the course of seven weeks, he visited seven different locations in Iceland, collaborating with seven different artists and, ultimately, releasing seven tracks, one each week.

Now, I'm probably just soppy, but I think that's incredibly cute and unique.

What I love about his sound is how he can turn a song into something so delicate, calming, almost with an aura of melancholy, but still beautiful.

Give him and some of his other tracks a listen. I promise you won't be disappointed. 

10.

Go! by M83 & MAI LAN

Okay, I know it's bad to have favourites, but really, this has been my favourite song for the month of July.

I mean, the first few seconds of this song could be summed up in these two words: Techno Jazz.

Weird huh?

Then, techno-like vocals kick in, with a build up of a countdown and a sweet guitar riff until the beat drops.

This song is just so jam packed with happy feels that I really can't stop listening to it.

Like, true talk now, every time this comes on Radio 6, I have to pause anything on my laptop and just appreciate the next four minutes.

You wanna feel some modern happiness? Listen to this bad boy!

The Jadelist: JUN 16

Hey hey lovely people

First off, this months Jadelist has been a nightmare, but not in a bad way, don't get it twisted!

I had to cut so many songs from this months list because I found way too much good music. Trimming it to 10 was the real life struggle.

Unfortunately, so many good songs had to go, but think of this as a list of ten fab tracks now, silver lining people!

So without further ado, here's the Jadelist for June:

1.

Long For You by Mar

So lets start on a track that doesn't necessarily sound up beat and summery for once. Progress, right?

This track starts on a lamentable style, almost solidifying this atmosphere until we get to the chorus where it takes on more of a techno/autotune style, with the bass making the song a bit more gentle. 

The vocals almost have that drifting in and out, dream like style to them, which is helped by them being a bit more high pitched too. 

Not to mention that the guitar riff is so encapsulating. 

It's funny because a lot of the features of this song remind me of a scary game, or some kind of jumpscare, especially when the vocals travel from one ear to the other (headphones are key for this song!), like it should feel unsettling, but it still brings across calmness.

2.

Look at me (When I Rock Wichoo) by Black Kids

I believe I first heard this song on my radio show I do on Thursdays on Newport City Radio, The Culture Bunker (shameless plug, I know), so shout out to Adam for this.

I like how this song has a softer rock to it that mixes well with techno elements, like a pop-punk-rock style. 

Plus, the female vocals in the bridge give it a pumped up, cheer style too, kinda like Huddle Formation by The Go! Team.

Just a little coincidence, Black Kids are on the radio right now as I'm writing this with I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance. 

Just gonna sit happy here feeling all kinds of 2009 with this track. 

3.

All That I Need by Max Pope

I think I first heard this song after going on a Spotify search fest.

Now, I'm such a sucker for a jazz vibe, and the bass in this is just incredible

But when the bridge hits in and it mixes with the guitar, I completely lose it and jump into musical nirvana (not the band!)

But lets not forget about the vocals that compliment the waviness of the music so well.

4.

I Keep Ticking On by The Harmaleighs 

First off, can we just appreciate the band name? The band is made of duo Hayley Grant and Kaylee Jasperson. HayLEY and KayLEE. HarmaLEIGHS. 10 points to these girls!

Pretty certain I first heard this song on an acoustic YouTube channel, and I fell in love with it.

I hate that a lot of people just expect all country/folk style songs to be slow and boring, because this disproves that assumption. 

This song is fast paced, lively, yet still grounded and lovely. 

But let's be honest, I'm biased when it comes to folk. Give me guitar and I'm hooked. 

The bass in the last bridge is something else. My foot can't keep still. Just putting a warning in here for when you listen!

5.

This Girl (Kungs Vs. Cookin' On 3 Burners) by Kungs 

Now, I thought this song was pretty popular by now. 

I found it not too long ago, but fangirled so much when I heard it on the radio, because all my favourite songs, especially instrumental heavy ones, never appear on the mainstream airwaves, so imagine my surprise when I heard this.

But every time I play this on radio, or in a car with someone, everyone is surprised and they immediately fall in love with it, asking what it's called. 

So much for mainstream, right?

But man, is it too much of me for calling this the summer song of 2016 already?

It has a fast paced summer beat, a tunnel style section, a heavy trumpet element. It looks like it's a winner!

Plus, you're never gonna forget a song that says Cookin' On 3 Burners now, are you? Talk about memorable. 

6.

Pretty Lights by Marvin Divine 

Whoah, now time for my nerdy side. 

I found this song because it was the outro song for leafyishere on YouTube. Already braces ready for the judgement. I am YouTube trash, this is fact.

But let's be honest, everyone's a sucker for what I like to call 'cute rap', y'know, when a rap has a beautiful backing to it.

Now, not to discredit Marvin, because his rapping isn't half bad (though, this is coming from me, who's clearly an expert in rap....), but man, he does get overshadowed by the chorus vocals.

This song is that weird combination of sadness, and cute music, but not gonna lie, I was addicted to this for a few days this month.

7.

17 (Feat. Packy) by Cyrus

Now for some more up tempo stuff.

This is one of those songs that you will lose it and just completely jam along to, but not tell a soul that you were dancing, or even listening.

Am I sat-down-dancing while writing this right now? Maybe...

I don't know, it just seems like that typical style of song that's made by a Vine star or something, but I'm shamefully in love with it, and I'm not even 17!

8.

Upside Down (Feat. Daniel James) by Jeremy Zucker

Moment of appreciation for this song.

Better yet, moment of appreciation for Jeremy Zucker as a whole, for being the perfect voice to accompany a trip at the beach

I mean, the guy has an album called Beach Island. Go figure.

So, considering I am pretty much addicted to the beach, this style of music is pretty much it for me.

So yeah, just gonna sit here and wish I was at the beach.

9.

Vitamin C by Clean Cut Kid

Well, this little gem was a product of me surfing through Spotify again.

Because I'm still not over Viola Beach, I thought it'd be a great idea to go through their related artists and hey presto, I found this.

Yep, this song was stuck in my head far too often in the month of June.

It has that indie-pop vibe that makes me very happy indeed.

Plus, who doesn't love a good beat to tap their foot to?

10.

Different by The Academic

The Academic, lol. I am not a student anymore. Haha, ha, ha... I have been triggered...

But on a more serious point, this song has that upbeat indie punk feel, almost like WALK THE MOON but with different vocals, a more British edge maybe, or should I say Irish, considering the group are from Mullingar (Big up Mullingar, I went to your Dunnes and bought some french fancies).

Either way, the guitar rhythm at the start of each verse, before all the other instruments build up is pretty infectious.

I'd keep an eye on these guys, especially if they keep making more music like this.

The Jadelist: MAY 16

Hey hey lovely people!

As you could probably tell from the previous post, I'm bulk writing these posts in June after I finally caught my breath post-deadlines

In all honesty, it's been so nice and almost therapeutic to take a couple of hours out today just to listen to some great music and write about it, and I really to love doing this.

Just finding some new tracks to listen to and going on some kind of musical scavenger hunt has been great, but now it's time to share with you what I've found.

So without further ado, here's the May Jadelist:

1.

What If I Go? by Mura Masa

Okay, so discovery-wise, it didn't take much effort to find this song!

One day when I was listening to Spotify, this add came on, and I've gotta say, I wasn't even mad.

What's great about this song is it starts very drum and vocal heavy, pretty cutesy if I might say, but then out of nowhere, the beat drops and completely changes, but here's the special part, it DIDN'T ruin the song

I mean half of the time, adding too much of a remix/techno sound completely ruins a song, but this compliments so much and man I am so happy

Also, after a quick Google, it turns out that Mura Masa is nearly a whole year younger than me and already making great tracks like this, so yeah, just gonna crawl into the corner right now...

2.

Warm Water - Snakehips Remix by Banks

Nope, this isn't some ripped straight from the video song, that party atmosphere is meant to be there.

Usually, having vocals that sound hollow and somewhat tinny would be pretty awful, but this strangely works, almost in a relaxed way.

This was definitely one of my more laid back remix tracks this month.

Also, nice to see Snakehips popping up and around again, considering that they have the midas touch of music for me, in the same way as Kygo!

3.

Sun by Jónsi

This was a funny one for me to put in

I don't think anyone could say that Jónsi creates awful music. His style is so unique, cute and still epic.

So naturally, one day I felt like going on a Jónsi hype and started spiralling into a sea of his tracks, on his own and with Sigur Rós, until I needed more songs, so started branching into the ones I hadn't yet heard.

Now, I'm such a summer freak, so of course the first one I clicked was Sun from the We Bought A Zoo soundtrack.

This track just captures seeing rays of sunlight into music form and ironically, gives me the chills.

4.

Younger - Kygo Remix by Seinabo Sey, Kygo

So Jade, where did you hear this great club track by Kygo? Anywhere exciting? An event?

Well, no. Actually, I heard it in a Skechers shop...

Shout out to Skechers for having some great music in their shops!

But back to the song. The moment I heard it, I was hooked.

It has that great style that I love, which made me think, it has to be Kygo. Low and behold, after a cheeky Shazam in the shop, it was indeed my favourite DJ.

There's something about the music that Kygo creates that embodies this summery vibe whatever time of year you listen to, which is surprising considering he's from Norway, not the first country you think of as being summery

Not to mention that this song is such a good motivator, because you ain't getting any younger, are you?

5.

Quesadilla by WALK THE MOON

That's right, I put a song in Jadelist that's called Quesadilla. I put a song in that's named after a food.

Does the word Quesadilla get mentioned in any of the song lyrics? No.

This song definitely has the typical WALK THE MOON vibe, but probably a bit more upbeat. Is it too much for me to say it has a very 2009 style, when Raybans were the thing and everyone wanted to be a scene kid?

Regardless, I think listening to this song will set you up to have a good day, I mean, nobody can be mad listening to this song. Music therapy people!

6.

LA Calling by Crystal Fighters

Maybe this song is just goals for me?

It sounds summery from the get go, especially with the guitar riff. It's about going to LA, which is definitely a dream of mine, and it's just very upbeat like be.

I'm sorry, did they make this song for me?!

The summery style of songs are definitely strong in this post. Yes, I'm really that excited for summer.

Guitar riff? Check

Great location mentioned in lyrics? Check

Summery vibe? Check

This song passes the official Jade summer song check. Good game everyone

7.

Ocean's Deep by Born Ruffians

Off topic, but as soon as I see Born Ruffians, the first thing I think of is Viva Piñata and the ruffians in the game? Anyone else? Am I too young?

I mean, continuing with names, Born Ruffians and Ocean's Deep just doesn't present the image of a song that sounds pretty upbeat and catchy, so feel surprised when you listen to this song.

When you look into it, the lyrics aren't really all that upbeat, talking about a breakup and the lies involved, but hey, who would notice that when it's hidden with an upbeat rhythm?!

Born Ruffians just have that typical English seaside town vibe, which is strange considering they're from Ontario, Canada.

8.

Some Minds by Flume, Andrew Wyatt

Now, for a change of music style after the vast majority of this month being upbeat, summery style songs.

I wish I could remember where I first heard this song, but it's completely slipped my mind, but I think it's either from an advert or some time where I Shazamed it.

It definitely sticks out like a sore thumb this month, being a bit more ominous, with, can I say a magical backing to it? Like little music specks of light in a dark room? Too visual and pretentious?

But then, as you start to edge towards the end of the song, and unexpected remix cuts in thanks to Flume, another favourite record producer of mine who just seems to be popping up everywhere.

9.

Life Itself by Glass Animals

Okay, no time for judgement but do you want to know where I found this song?

Buzzfeed. That's right, I found this song using a Buzzed quiz, and I'm not even mad.

The intro of this song really gives you a different impression of what the song will be like, until it starts to change about 50 seconds in, bringing much more of a pop vibe.

It's funny because I have barely heard any Adam Lambert songs, but that was the first impression I got from the vocals; very alluring and pop prince style.

Which is completely weird to me, because I've heard Glass Animals before. Their song, Gooey, was definitely a big favourite of mine and my official soundtrack to meteor showers, but I never would have guessed that this track was from the same band. 

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this song becomes pretty big, I mean it checks those unwritten boxes to become a pop hit, so it's just a matter of waiting and wishing, but I have an inkling this will do very well indeed.

10.

We Two Are a Moon by Sam Beam and Jesca Hoop

Now to end on a cutesy song if I ever did hear one.

I first heard this when I was listening to Radio 6 in the bath. Imagery.

But no, because I was in the bath, I didn't quite catch the artists at first, which lead to a furious drying of hands, rewinding on TuneIn and Googling lyrics.

This song has a nocturnal, romantic, acoustic style that just sounds oh so cute, but also something that reminds me of insomnia.

That's something I love about Radio 6, giving you the opportunity to listen to artists you may have otherwise not encountered, and this is a perfect example of that.

So go ahead and take a listen!
